| New spelling rules become mandatory | | On their meeting in Quedlinburg on June 2nd and 3rd, the German Länder ministers for education decreed that starting from August 2005, only the new spelling rules for German shall be accepted in schools and in official language usage - with the exception of those parts of the reform that are still being discussed controversially: for the time being, both old and new rules for the spelling of compound words, syllable division and punctuation will be considered acceptable.
